Sunscreens That Still List Oxybenzone: 19 Current US Labels

Last updated October 20, 2026

The Active ingredients line of the Drug Facts box is the only reliable place to check, and in October 2026 the labels that still list it are mostly SPF 70 and 100 sport and kids sunscreens, plus one SPF 60 body spray, a few face products and two lip balms.

Partial UVB + UVA II

Oxybenzone, also labeled benzophenone-3, has disappeared from most everyday sunscreens, but it has not gone. These are 19 sunscreens sold in the US whose current label still lists it, with the percentage and the other active ingredients exactly as the label prints them. We read each label on 21 October 2026: the FDA-filed label on DailyMed, including its label images, and the ingredient panel on the product's Amazon US listing where there is one. None of them is linked, on purpose; oxybenzone-free alternatives are at the end of the page.

How to read the table. "Oxybenzone" and "Other active ingredients" are the label's own Active ingredients line, percentages as printed. "Label read" gives the month of the FDA label we read and whether the Amazon US listing showed the same formula. Four products have a current FDA label but no Amazon US listing we could find; they are marked. Products are ordered by labeled SPF.

Where oxybenzone still turns up

Mostly at the top of the SPF range. Eleven of the 19 are SPF 70 and 100 sunscreens, mostly sport and kids lines, from Coppertone and Banana Boat, and in those two brands it stops there: their SPF 50 and 60 labels on file list no oxybenzone, and the chemical ones mostly combine avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene instead. The 12 body sunscreens in the table, those 11 plus La Roche-Posay's Anthelios SPF 60 spray lotion, use 3.5% to 6%.

The other seven are products people may not think of as sunscreens: daily face moisturizers and day creams with an SPF (Cetaphil, Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture, Shiseido Benefiance), two face sunscreens (Estée Lauder's Aqua UV Gel and Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 55), and two lip balms, Aquaphor Lip Protectant + Sunscreen and Carmex Daily Care. Six of the 19 pair oxybenzone with octinoxate, the other filter named in Hawaii's ban.

Same name, different formula

A product name does not tell you which formula you are holding. Several well-known sunscreens have two FDA labels on file at once, one with oxybenzone and one without:

Retail panels lag too. The Amazon panels for Banana Boat's SPF 100 lotions print octocrylene 8%, the figure on the 2025 labels; the October 2026 labels print 7.5%. And the Amazon panels for Coppertone Kids SPF 50 spray still list oxybenzone 6%, though every Coppertone Kids SPF 50 label on file lists none. Read the Drug Facts box on the pack you buy.

How to check any label

In the US, look at the Active ingredients line at the top of the Drug Facts box. Oxybenzone is an active ingredient, so a sunscreen that uses it must name it there with its percentage, as every product in the table does. The same chemical is spelled benzophenone-3 (or BP-3) on European and Asian ingredient lists, and EU rules require products that contain it to say "Contains Benzophenone-3". Front-of-pack claims are a shortcut, not proof: "oxybenzone-free" tells you nothing about the other filters, and most oxybenzone-free sunscreens use other chemical filters rather than minerals.

To check a full ingredient list, paste it into our sunscreen ingredient decoder, which recognizes every spelling and trade name of oxybenzone in our UV filter dataset.

Why people look for oxybenzone-free sunscreen

FDA maximal-use absorption trials (2019 and 2020)

Oxybenzone reached the highest blood levels of any filter the FDA tested. In the 2020 trial, the oxybenzone lotion produced a geometric mean peak of 258.1 ng/mL and the aerosol spray 180.1 ng/mL; a single application on day one already produced 94.2 and 85.4 ng/mL. On day 21, 17 days after the last application, 96% of participants (22 of 23) were still above 0.5 ng/mL. That level is the point above which the FDA may ask for further safety studies; it is a testing threshold, not a level shown to cause harm. Neither paper names a commercial product.

A CDC biomonitoring analysis found benzophenone-3 in 96.8% of 2,517 US urine samples from 2003 and 2004. Our oxybenzone page sets out the absorption, endocrine and coral research in full.

Oxybenzone-free mineral alternatives

If you want to avoid oxybenzone altogether, a mineral sunscreen is the simplest check, because its Active ingredients line names only zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both. These six are oxybenzone-free mineral alternatives we have already verified on this site; their actives are as the labels print them, and each was in stock on Amazon US on 21 October 2026.

None of them reaches the SPF 70 or 100 of the sport sunscreens above; the highest is SPF 50. For how the two minerals compare, see mineral sunscreens; for 24 more mineral labels with their percentages, see the mineral sunscreen list.

How we checked

We pulled every label on DailyMed, the FDA's label database, that lists oxybenzone (1,647 entries), kept the brands most sold in the US, and read each candidate's current label, its typed Drug Facts and its label images, and the Amazon US listing for the same product. Then we checked the same brands' other labels for an oxybenzone-free version of the same product. The table keeps products whose newest FDA label lists oxybenzone; where an Amazon panel differs, the row says so. About 15 candidates turned out oxybenzone-free on their current label, including the products in "Same name, different formula" above. Prices are left off on purpose; they change daily.

Left out: products whose label with oxybenzone dates from 2023 to early 2025 and which we could not find on Amazon US (among them a Lancôme facial sunscreen, a Clinique SPF 50 and an Obagi moisturizer); two products whose label images were too small to read; store brands, several of whose SPF 70 and 100 labels list oxybenzone but date from 2024; and products sold mainly outside the US.

Our Verdict

Oxybenzone is easy to spot and easy to avoid: it is named, with a percentage, in the Active ingredients line of every US sunscreen that uses it. It is also the filter with the strongest case against it. In the FDA's 2020 absorption trial it reached 258.1 ng/mL in blood and stayed above the agency's 0.5 ng/mL screening level for three weeks in 96% of participants; the FDA proposed in 2021 that it is not generally recognized as safe and effective for lack of data; the EU caps it at 2.2% in body products; and Hawaii bars its sale in sunscreen without a prescription. Coppertone and Banana Boat now use it only in their SPF 70 and 100 lines, and several popular products have a second label on file without it, so an oxybenzone-free choice is rarely hard to find.

Pros

  • Always named, with its percentage, in the Active ingredients line of a US label
  • Covers UVB and UVA II in one filter
  • Still listed in the FDA's sunscreen monograph at up to 6%, so these products remain on sale in the US

Cons

  • The highest blood levels of any filter in the FDA's absorption trials: 258.1 ng/mL from the lotion
  • Proposed by the FDA in 2021 as not generally recognized as safe and effective, for lack of data
  • Every body sunscreen in this list uses 3.5% to 6%, above the 2.2% the EU allows in body products
  • Banned from sale in Hawaii without a prescription since 2021

Recommended: Raw Elements Face + Body SPF 30 — an oxybenzone-free mineral alternative: non-nano zinc oxide 23% is its only active ingredient

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sunscreens contain oxybenzone?

Of the US sunscreens we checked in October 2026, 19 list oxybenzone on their current label. Eleven are SPF 70 and 100 sport and kids sunscreens from Coppertone and Banana Boat, such as Coppertone Sport SPF 100 lotion (oxybenzone 6%) and Banana Boat 100 Sport lotion (3.5%). The rest are La Roche-Posay's Anthelios SPF 60 Ultra Light spray lotion, four face moisturizers and sunscreens (Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 50, Estée Lauder Multi-Defense Aqua UV Gel SPF 50, Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 55 and Oil-Free Moisture SPF 15), Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Day Cream SPF 23, and two lip balms, Aquaphor Lip Protectant + Sunscreen and Carmex Daily Care. To check any product, read the Active ingredients line of its Drug Facts box.

What is an oxybenzone-free sunscreen?

One whose Active ingredients line does not list oxybenzone, which may also appear as benzophenone-3. It does not mean the sunscreen is mineral: most oxybenzone-free sunscreens in US stores use other chemical filters instead. Coppertone's and Banana Boat's SPF 50 and 60 labels, for example, list no oxybenzone, and the chemical ones mostly combine avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene. A mineral sunscreen lists only zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both.

Which sunscreen brands still use oxybenzone?

Among the labels we read, Coppertone and Banana Boat use it in their SPF 70 and 100 sport and kids lines, but not in their SPF 50 and 60 labels. It also appears in single products from La Roche-Posay, Neutrogena, Cetaphil, Estée Lauder, Shiseido, Aquaphor and Carmex. Several products that used it have a second label on file without it, including Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist SPF 70, Neutrogena Beach Defense and La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk SPF 60, so check the box in your hand rather than the brand.

What products contain oxybenzone besides sunscreen?

Among the products we checked, the ones that are not beach or sport sunscreens are face moisturizers and day creams with an SPF (Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 50, Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture SPF 15, Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Day Cream SPF 23) and lip balms with an SPF (Aquaphor Lip Protectant + Sunscreen at 5.4%, Carmex Daily Care at 4.00%). We only checked products sold with an SPF. In the EU, oxybenzone may also be used at up to 0.5% purely to protect a formula.

Which sunscreens contain oxybenzone and octinoxate?

In this list, six: Coppertone Sport SPF 100 spray and Coppertone Kids Sport SPF 100 spray (octinoxate 2%), Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 50 (7.5%), Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Day Cream SPF 23 (7.4%), Aquaphor Lip Protectant + Sunscreen (6.75%) and Carmex Daily Care lip balm (7.50%). These are the two filters Hawaii's 2018 law bars from sunscreen sold without a prescription. To avoid both, check the Active ingredients line; the mineral sunscreens in our alternatives list contain neither.

Is oxybenzone banned?

Not by any of the major regulators. The US, Canada, the EU, Australia and Japan all permit it with a maximum: 6% in the US and Canada, 10% in Australia, 5% in leave-on products in Japan, and in the EU 6% in face, hand and lip products, 2.2% in body products and sprays. Hawaii has barred selling sunscreen that contains oxybenzone or octinoxate without a prescription since 1 January 2021. Key West passed a similar ban, but Florida law preempted it before it took effect.
