SPF 100 vs SPF 50: The Trial Evidence

Two randomized head-to-head trials have tested SPF 100 against SPF 50 on the same people at the same time — one on a ski slope, one on a beach. Both found the higher number burned dramatically less in real-world use, for a reason that has little to do with the lab math: almost nobody applies enough sunscreen for the label value to hold.

The Head-to-Head Trials
Split-Face in Natural Sunlight: SPF 100+ vs SPF 50+ (2018)
In a randomized, double-blind trial at Vail, Colorado, 199 skiers wore SPF 100+ sunscreen on one side of the face and SPF 50+ on the other for a day of average 6.1 hours of high-altitude sun. By the next morning, 55.3% (110 of 199) were more sunburned on the SPF 50+ side, versus 5% (10 of 199) more burned on the SPF 100+ side. The result is widely misquoted with the trial's erythema-score numbers; the sunburn split is 110 versus 10.

Beach Conditions Over Five Days (2020)
A follow-up randomized split-body trial had 55 beachgoers use SPF 100+ on one body side and SPF 50+ on the other across five consecutive days. 56% burned on the SPF 50+ side versus 7% on the SPF 100+ side — and the SPF 50+ side typically burned on day one, while the SPF 100+ side held until day three. Same research program and funder as the 2018 trial, so these are two results from one sponsor, not independent replications.

Why the Higher Number Wins: Nobody Applies Enough
SPF labels are measured at 2.0 mg of product per square centimetre of skin. Real users apply far less: a 2024 analysis of over 9,000 US consumers found a median of 1.35 mg/cm² on the body and 1.78 mg/cm² on the face, and 36 of 38 historical application studies measured below the 2.0 standard. Format matters too — one study measured lotions at 1.1, sprays at 1.6, and sticks at just 0.35 mg/cm².
At reduced doses, delivered protection falls steeply. Product-dependent measurements show that halving the applied amount divides effective SPF by roughly 1.5x to 3.8x depending on the formulation — so an under-applied SPF 50 can deliver real-world protection in the teens, while an under-applied SPF 100 keeps a workable margin. That arithmetic, not the 98%-vs-99% lab filtration difference, is what the split-face trials measured.

The Label Number Is Softer Than It Looks
The Same Product Can Test SPF 18 or SPF 49 (2025)
A 2025 inter-laboratory study sent 32 sunscreen products to 12 testing labs. A product labeled SPF 30 showed a reproducibility span of SPF 18.1 to 49.5 across laboratories, with variability growing at higher SPF levels. Label values are best read as a tier, not a precise measurement — one more reason the gap between "50" and "100" is about margin, not exact doubling.

The Regulatory Picture
There is no maximum labeled SPF in force in the United States. The FDA proposed capping labels at "SPF 60+" in February 2019 (84 FR 6204), re-proposed the framework in 2021, and has finalized nothing on the cap since — which is why SPF 100 products are sold in the US while EU and Australian labels stop at "50+". The FDA's stated rationale is worth quoting: "the theoretical increase in protection implied by higher SPF values generated in a laboratory does not necessarily correspond to meaningful additional sunburn protection for consumers in actual use conditions." The head-to-head trials above were run, in part, to challenge exactly that premise.
The Catch: Higher Numbers Change Behavior
People Spend the Extra Protection on More Sun (1999)
In a randomized trial of 87 young adults given unlabeled SPF 10 or SPF 30 sunscreen for their vacation, the SPF 30 group accumulated 72.6 hours of sun exposure versus 58.2 hours for the SPF 10 group (P=.011) — with no difference in sunburn. The higher number was spent on more time in the sun rather than banked as protection. No modern replication exists at the 50-vs-100 tier, but the behavioral risk is the strongest argument against relying on a big number instead of shade, clothing, and reapplication.

If you reliably apply a generous amount and reapply every two hours, SPF 50 is sufficient. In the world the trials measured — one application, half the tested dose, a full day outside — SPF 100 sunburned about eleven times less often than SPF 50. The higher number is not marketing fluff; it is a buffer against the way sunscreen is actually used. It only backfires if it becomes a license to stay out longer.
