Bemotrizinol (bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, sold as Tinosorb S) became the first new active ingredient added to the US sunscreen monograph in roughly 25 years when the FDA finalized its GRASE order in June 2026. What It Is
Bemotrizinol is a triazine-based organic UV filter developed in the 1990s and used in European, Australian, and Asian sunscreens for over two decades. Its defining physical trait is size: a molecular weight of 627.8 daltons, versus 228 for oxybenzone and 310 for avobenzone. Compounds above roughly 500 daltons penetrate skin poorly — the "500 Dalton rule" of dermal absorption — which is the structural reason its blood-absorption results differ so sharply from the smaller legacy filters.

Broad Absorption, Stable Under Sun

Bemotrizinol is one of the stabilizers that solves avobenzone's photodegradation problem: combination testing showed sunscreens pairing the two sustained their SPF and UVA protection through 30 minimal erythema doses of irradiation. In vitro comparisons of organic UVA filters found bemotrizinol at 10% delivered the highest UVA protection factor measured (11.8), comparable to titanium dioxide at 25%.

The FDA's 2019-2020 maximal-usage trials made systemic absorption the central question for every chemical filter — homosalate exceeded the 0.5 ng/mL evaluation threshold 47-fold, octisalate 10-fold, avobenzone 9-fold. No Hormonal Activity in Published Screens
Published screening found no estrogen- or androgen-receptor binding and no activity in the rodent uterotrophic assay. Independent academic work adds to this: a 2018 screen of 29 UV filters for direct effects on human sperm cells found bemotrizinol was not among the filters that induced an acrosome reaction — a contrast with several legacy filters that did.
